Poetry in the Early 20th Century Years

Our modern days began in the mid-20th century, between the two great wars but art, and especially poetry, was undergoing modernization before then, at the beginning of that century.

After Henry Ford initiated his innovative ideas on car assembly in the 20s, even more giant steps were taken in technology by his contemporaries and those who came after them. Of the many breakthroughs that amazed people in those heroic times, two of the most far-reaching were the electric dynamo and broadcast radio. At the same time, poetry was being modernized by a group of poets like Carl Sandburg, Amy Lowell Ezra Pound and others.

Also during this period, Albert Einstein presented his Theory of Relativity and, by the mid-century mark, mankind had begun conquering space and rebel poets introduced “beat” poetry. In entertainment, The Beatles burst onto the popular music scene, adding zest to our life. Then came the digital age, which gave us access to the World Wide Web. And this brought even more major changes to our way of life.
